Protective helmet for doctors with 3D printers and ...... CNC milling machines?
The 3D printing community has been helping a lot since the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemy. Especially, since the protective visor model that almost any printer user can print have appear.
Many people, institutions and enterprises have recently managed to produce and deliver products necessary for the construction of printers and many other machines. Unfortunately, we do not have ready-made 3D printers in our workshops and for some time we have been wondering if the owners of CNC milling machines could also help in the production of protective face visors.
Medical protective visors for doctors made on a CNC milling machine
Printing visors using 3D printers brings many advantages that we will not write about here this time. Time is a problem with 3D printing. A standard 3D printer that anyone can have in their workshop takes an average of 30 minutes to print only one helmet.
As the demand for this product is huge, a long duration of production, it is a very important aspect. One of the members of the OpenBuilds community (Ariel Yahni) has posted on the OpenBuilds USA website a design of a protective visor that can be cut on a laser or CNC milling machine!
The main advantage of making this element on the milling machine or laser is definitely time.
We made our first copy on test settings in a polystyrene sheet using a 2mm cutter and test program settings. The time that the milling machine needed to make one ready to use element did not exceed 2 minutes! The idea, however, has one big drawback - material waste.
Unfortunately, the shape of the element makes a lot of material waste and is not suitable to produce the next one.
So, the solution is not perfect and will certainly not replace the idea of printing - however, we believe that if time plays a key role or the availability of an element for the construction of protective face visors decreases, people with CNC milling machines will also be able to support this very important initiative!
Below you will find a video showing the entire process of preparing a model for a CNC milling machine, the milling process, photos, and files that will allow you to make such a model on your own milling machine. Here, we would like to thank the OpenBuilds community again and especially Ariel Yahni for preparing the project and placing it on the OpenBuilds USA website.
